Read This!: THE WINTERTON DECEPTION 1: FINAL WORD by Janet Sumner Johnson

The Winterton Deception 1: Final WordThe Winterton Deception 1: Final Word by Janet Sumner Johnson
Summary: Hope Smith can’t stand rich people—the dictionary magnate family the Wintertons most of all. Not since she and her twin brother, Gordon, learned that their dad was one. So when Gordon enters the family into the Winterton’s charity spelling bee, Hope wants nothing to do with it. But with their mom losing her job and the family facing eviction from the motel where they live, they desperately need the money, and it looks like Hope doesn’t have much of a choice. After winning the preliminary round, the Smiths are whisked to Winterton Chalet to compete in the official Winterton Bee against their long-lost relatives. Hope wants to get in and out, beat the snobbish family at their own game, and never see them again. But deceased matriarch Jane Winterton had other plans for this final family showdown. Before her death, she set up a clue hunt throughout the manor—an alternate way for Hope and Gordon to get the money that could change their lives. Still, others are on the trail, too. With tensions at an all-time high, a fortune at stake, and long-simmering family secrets about to boil to the surface, anything could happen.

This book was so much fun! The idea of building a puzzle mystery around a high-stakes spelling bee put on by a mysterious wealthy family is brilliant. Hope is a smart, funny, and compelling heroine who grows from closing herself off to the world to opening herself up to a relationship with her extended family. This is exactly the kind of book that keeps you up late, unable to put it down. Even better, it’s the first in a series. I can’t wait for the next installment!

Read This!: HELP WANTED: MUST LOVE BOOKS by Janet Sumner Johnson

Help Wanted: Must Love BooksHelp Wanted: Must Love Books by Janet Sumner Johnson
Summary: When Shailey’s dad gets a new job, she loses her bedtime reading partner. She immediately starts interviews to fill the position and is thrilled when her favorite fairy tale characters line up to apply. But Sleeping Beauty can’t stay awake, the Gingerbread Man steals her book, and Snow White brings her whole team. Shailey is running out of options. Is bedtime ruined forever?

Shailey loves bedtime reading with her dad – until his new job causes so many distractions that she fires him and advertises for a replacement. A parade of familiar fairy tale faces show up to interview for the position, but will anyone be right for the job? From the three little pigs being intimidated by the competition (the big bad wolf) to the gingerbread man running away with the books and Goldilocks being too picky about where to sit, Help Wanted: Must Love Books finds all the hidden humor in its delightful premise. Johnson’s clever, punny text works in perfect harmony with Dawson’s bold illustrations, both bringing the resourceful heroine and the silly situation to life. With a pitch-perfect note of parent-child connection at the end, this is an ideal bedtime book.

Read This!: THE LAST GREAT ADVENTURE OF THE PB&J SOCIETY by Janet Sumner Johnson

The Last Great Adventure of the PB&J SocietyThe Last Great Adventure of the PB&J Society by Janet Sumner Johnson

Summary: Some things are better together. Like peanut butter and jelly. Or Annie and Jason. So when her best friend’s house is threatened with foreclosure, Annie Jenkins is bursting with ideas to save Jason’s home. She could sell her appendix on eBay. (Why not?) Win the lottery. (It’s worth a shot!). Face the evil bankers herself. (She’s one tough cookie, after all.) Or hunt down an elusive (and questionably real) pirate treasure. Whatever the plan, it has to work, or this is undoubtedly THE LAST GREAT ADVENTURE OF THE PB&J SOCIETY.

Ten-year-old Annie is big-hearted and impulsive, so it’s a good thing she’s got her best friend Jason to keep her grounded – he’s the peanut butter to her jelly. When Jason’s father loses his job and his family’s house is threatened with foreclosure, Annie knows she has to do something to help. A series of wacky plans ranging from the ridiculous (“win a radio contest”) to the surprising successful (organizing a neighborhood-wide anonymous food donation program) ensue, but through it all Annie and Jason find themselves up against the unwelcome idea that change in their lives is inevitable. One such change is the newly friendly attitude of their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Schuster, who regales them with tales of unlikely pirate treasure buried in their Utah neighborhood. From the hilariously funny opening, where Annie and Jason perform a ritual burial of a smushed PB&J, to the bittersweet, hopeful ending, this winning tale will have you rooting for these two loyal, likable protagonists and their deep friendship.
