SWORD AND VERSE Playlist

I always have music playing when I write, but there have been certain songs that really resonated with me as reflecting the characters and themes of Sword and Verse.

Here’s the Spotify playlist where you can hear them all:

More info about how each song fits with the story:

  1. “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield: I consider this the theme song of the book, both for the literal theme of writing and the idea of Raisa finding out who she is.
  2. “Outro” by M83: A wonderful atmospheric song that matches the mood of the story.
  3. “Something of a Dreamer” by Mary Chapin Carpenter: This one is all about Raisa for me.
  4. “I Know Places” by Ryan Adams (I also love the Taylor Swift version, but that’s not on Spotify.): Raisa and Mati in love and in hiding.
  5. “Halo” by Beyonce: A song for when things are going well for our lovers…
  6. “North and South of the River” by Christy Moore: …and the first of many for when the reality of their positions becomes clear.
  7. “I’m Not That Girl” by Idina Menzel (from Wicked): Heartache and pain for our heroine.
  8. “All of the Stars” by Ed Sheeran: …and more heartache and pain.
  9. “Sleeping with Ghosts” by Placebo: And more.
  10. “The Kind of Love You Never Recover From” by Christine Lavin: If things hadn’t worked out with Mati, Raisa would have been okay.  But she never would have fully recovered, and I think this song captures that idea beautifully.
  11. “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica: I think of this song being from Mati’s point of view, as he realizes where his priorities are.
  12. “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson: For this moment: “I was not foolish enough to think that the situation had changed…But I had changed. I knew how it felt for my heart to lie dormant, and now that it had been reawakened it would not go silent again.”
  13. “Master Pretender” by First Aid Kit (warning: there are naughty words in this one!): I think of this as Mati’s theme song.
  14. “Wherever You Will Go” by Charlene Soraia: With lyrics like “If a great wave shall fall/It’d fall upon us all/I hope there’s someone out there who/could bring me back to you”, how could I not include this song?
  15. “Waiting on the World to Change” by John Mayer: For Jonis and the Resistance.  (Bonus: Check out this wonderful video of the song in ASL from the Deaf Professional Arts Network!)
  16. “This is the New Year” by A Great Big World: For the new Council.

Thank you to my amazing betareader Manuela Bernardi and to Nicola of Queen of the Bookshelves for their contributions to this list!

ASL Interview

I’ve been fortunate to participate in lots of great interviews about Sword and Verse in the pas few weeks, but this is my favorite!  That’s because it was conducted by Ruth Lehrer, a fellow American Sign Language interpreter and the author of the forthcoming middle grade novel Being Fishkill (Candlewick, 2017).  We decided to do the interview in American Sign Language to make it completely accessible to our friends in the Deaf community.  (Don’t worry, nonsigners – we also provided an English transcript – mostly.  There’s a bonus, untranslated question for signers only!)

I loved the thoughtful questions Ruth asked about the role of language in the book, and I loved the opportunity to share how my experiences in the Deaf community impacted the story.  I hope you will enjoy this interview as much as I did!  Watch the interview in ASL or read it in English at the Swanky Seventeens Blog.

7 Years

Exactly 7 years ago today, I got an email from agent Lindsay Davis saying that she wanted to work with me to revise the manuscript that eventually became Sword and Verse.  I was leaving an interpreting job, and was walking out to the parking lot with my team interpreter.  It was the first time the other interpreter and I had worked together, and I was sure she thought I was having some kind of fit when I looked at my phone and then started babbling incoherently.  (We have worked together since, and she assures me that this isn’t the case.)

The whole twisty narrative, if you’re interested, can be found here.  But the point is: that was 7 years ago today.  In 6 days, Sword and Verse will finally be out in the world.  You know how they say, “Never give up”?

Never give up, kids.

News and Excitement

Lots of exciting things are happening for Sword and Verse!  A couple of them:

1) Positive early reader response in the UK has led to the decision to put the book out in hardcover in the UK market,  rather than waiting for paperback.

2) Just found out a few days ago that Sword and Verse will be released on audio!  As someone who is concerned with accessibility,  and as a lover of audiobooks, I am tickled pink!

Sword and Verse Pronunciation Guide

Four months from tomorrow, Sword and Verse will be published!  To celebrate, I have posted a pronunciation guide showing how to say to the names of the gods, characters, places, and story-specific words in the book.  This is something that several early readers have asked for, so I hope others will find it interesting too!  (And there are a few extra details in this guide that you won’t find in the book too!)
