Free Resources for Read Captions Across America Day

March 2 is Read Across America Day – and it’s also Read Captions Across America Day!

Read Captions Across America poster. Cartoon drawing of five children wearing top hats with red and white stripes. One is holding a tablet with captions enabled.

Led by the Described and Captioned Media Program, Read Captions Across America (RCAA) is held in conjunction with the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America event every year on or around March 2.

The purpose of Read Captions Across America is to raise awareness—particularly among children and their parents and teachers—that video-based media can be just as effective at encouraging and fostering reading skills as books, as long as captions are always turned on!

Captions aren’t just for deaf and hard-of-hearing people! Studies show that captions benefit almost everyone, including beginning readers, people with learning disabilities, and English language learners!

Book Lists!

Thank you to Colorado Parent for including The Runaway Shirt in their roundup of books about chores and family responsibilities:

Also announced this week:

2021 Rise: A Feminist Book Project List. This excellent list of 2020 titles, divided into Early Readers, Middle Grade, and Young Adult categories, with fiction and nonfiction categories, highlights quality feminist literature for young readers. She Spoke was an honoree on last year’s list, and we are so excited to see the excellent company it continues to have, with so many books that provide inspiration for young readers. In the words of the Rise Committee: “As we take stock of what we have lost, we must continue to fight. We must hold both in our hearts: the past and the future.” Congratulations to all of the honorees!

Laundry Love Storytime Tomorrow on Instagram

It is a truth universally acknowledged that doing laundry is not fun – unless you have a little one around to make it into a game, or really cool tools to make it easier.  I have long been a fan of the SmartKlean Laundry Ball, a mineral-based cleaner that effectively washes 365 loads of fabrics without harsh chemicals, soap or detergent. So I was delighted when SmartKlean invited me to take over their Instagram feed for a storytime celebrating laundry fun with The Runaway Shirt! Join me on Thursday, September 10 at 11 AM Eastern for a Laundry Love Storytime!
